A high temperature super-conducting transformer (HTST)has been built. It has been designed to operate in liquidnitrogen, an environmentally benign element thatrepresents little fire and personnel safety risk. Thetransformer is based on the concept of a partial or opencore, where the magnetic circuit is incomplete. The partialcore was a slug of laminated silicon steel. This concepthas been the result of intensive study and the developmentof analytical models that have allowed a design somewhatdifferent than what has been attempted elsewhere in theworld of superconducting transformers. The transformerwas designed purely as a device to prove that the conceptworks, rather than as a unit that would be put into service. The transformer windings were configured to allowdifferent arrangements, namely internal primary, externalprimary and autotransformer. The nominal ratings aresingle phase, 50 Hz, 15kVA, 230V:115V.
