The relationships of the acquisition department to the library's total program

I suggest that a more fruitful approach to administrative planningis the use of an individual function, or group of related functions, asthe unit of organization instead of a department with its traditional setof tasks. Several unorthodox and effective uses of library staff havebeen devised through the use of the function as the unit of planning.Two examples that come immediately to mind are the use of divisionallibrarians by Frank Lundy in subject cataloging, and the use of aprofessional core of bibliographers by Ralph Parker for aspects ofboth acquisition and cataloging.
