New information technologies and opportunities regarding input/output devices

This paper presents a framework for looking at different kinds of input/output devices, and provides some general characteristics regarding input/output devices currently on the market. This paper will cover personal-use input/output devices. By "personaluse" we mean those things that would normally be found at a userwork station to support individuals in their work activities. These deviceswould also make it possible for them to communicate with one or moreinformation retrieval systems. Not included in this particular group arecard readers, line printers, floppy discs, hard discs, modems, point-of-saleterminals (which you probably have contact with every day in supermarkets),and automated teller machines (where you can get cash any timeof day or night).
