Design and Development of a Library Information Workstation

This paper describes the design and continuing development of theUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library InformationWorkstation, which provides the primary, in-library patron access toILLINET Online Plus, the Library's extended online public access catalogsystem. The automated library information resources and informationprocessing environment are briefly described as they haveinfluenced the design and development of the Library InformationWorkstation. The Library Information Workstation philosophy andapproach are discussed in the context of relevant information accessissues and patron needs and requirements. Features of the current LibraryInformation Workstation implementation are then described usingillustrations focused particularly on integrated access to local (residenton individual workstations) information files and an integrated enduserinterface for bibliographic database searching. Ongoingdevelopment plans also are discussed briefly.
