Introduction to Managers and missionaries : library services to children and young adults in the information age (Papers presented at the Allerton Park Institute November 14-16, 1986)

The 1986 Allerton Institute was developed to provide a forum for discussionof theories and means of meeting the information needs of childrenand young adults in both school and public library settings. The institutewas cosponsored by the Graduate School of Library and InformationScience, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the three youthdivisions of the American Library Association (ALA): the American Associationof School Librarians (AASL), the Association for Library Service toChildren (ALSC), and the Young Adult Services Division (YASD). Theconference was supported by the World Book ALA Goal Award andtwenty Illinois participants received grants from the Illinois State Library toenable their attendance at the conference. The conference program was developedwith the particular help ofAnn Weeks and Evelyn Shaevel, both of ALA.Speakers gave an overview of issues in the field of youth librarianshipand presented perspectives on specific issues challenging librarians andmedia specialists. Speakers and conference participants worked together todetermine directions and strategies for the profession as we look to achanging information environment in the years to come.
