This paper presents a research project aiming at designing a Virtual Articulator in order to simulate andanalyze mandibular movements of the human jaw. Its main goal is to improve the design of dentalprostheses, adding kinematic analysis to the design process. First, plaster models are scanned. Second, thetype of articulator is selected. Third, the prosthesis is statically modelled. Fourth, excursive movements aresimulated using a CAD system, analyzing occlusal collisions to adequate/modify the design. Finally, thecurrent shortcomings of virtual articulator simulation are discussed in detail and a research prospect isadvanced.
