Previous research of laryngeal-oral gestural coordinationudin vowel-voiceless fricative sequencesud(Vf) shows that earlier timing of glottal openingudrelative to oral constriction is a languageindependentudaerodynamic property. In this paper, udwe provide evidence that the extent of this gesturaluddissociation is nonetheless learnable in a varietyspecificudway, and is, thus, actively controlled. Thisudstudy shows that in some British English varieties, udlarge temporal laryngeal-oral dissociation in Vfudtransitions is a correlate of the fricative /voice/udcontrast, while the dissociation is much tighter in audlanguage neutralising /voice/ such as Russian. Theudlearnability of Vf-gestures is important in theudcontext of theories on gestural phonology andudacoustic multidimensionality of the /voice/udcontrast.
