摘要

The manuscript reports on the incidence of fecal-borne viral and bacterialcontamination found in specified sampling sites along the Oyster River in New Hampshire. Emphasis was given to sampling around the outfall of the city wastewater treatment facility, located on the tidal portion of the Oyster River, and to a sampling site located immediately above the upstream dam, which is not under tidal influence. In addition, the study evaluates the use of gene probes, compared to tissue culture, for the detection of poliovirus from the Oyster River. All indicator groups of bacteria were detected in all except one sample of river water collected. Samples where one or more indicators were not detected were more common at the outfall site, especially in the effluent itself, indicative of the effectiveness of the chlorination of the effluent for killing indicator bacteria. Levels of the bacterial indicators differed between sample sites. The variability in numbers of the different indicators over the sampling period (Summer 1989 to Summer 1990) was usually large enough to not be able to accept the observed differences between sites as statistically significant.
