Cattle Feeding, 1962-89: Location and Feedlot Size

In 1989, four Plains States, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado, marketed over70 percent of the 22,955,000 fed cattle that were fed in 13 cattle feeding states. In 1955, six states, Iowa, Nebraska, California, Illinois, Colorado, and Kansas, marketed about the same percentage of 9,001,000 fed cattle. Cattle feedlots in 13 states decreased from about 164,000 in 1962 to about 47,000 in 1989. Seventy-nine lots finished almost one-third and 391 lots finished over two-thirds of the fed cattle in 1989. The over 46,000 smaller lots finished the remaining one-third.
