Seeking Solutions: High-Performance Computing for Science

Information technology is a critical element for science and engineering. TheUnited States is building a nationwide computer-communication infrastructure to provide high-speed data services to the R&D community, but the mere installation of hardware is not enough. Whether very fast data communication networks and high-performance computers deliver their promised benefits will depend on the institutions, processes, and policies that are established to design and manage the new system. The background paper examines high-performance computing as part of the infrastructure proposed in the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) initiative.
