Manufacturing of Components of Fibre-Metal Laminates: An Overview.

To manufacture components of fiber-metal laminates the same processes can be used as for conventional materials. In some cases, however, the tools have to be adapted to this laminated material. The workshop properties of fiber-metal laminates are good for machining processes (comparable to metal alloys) and are moderate where the forming processes are concerned. The complexity of a component of fiber-metal laminates is limited by the use of fibers. The fibers in these laminates limit the failure strain in at least one direction and introduce a considerable anisotropy. Nevertheless, many suitable applications of fiber-metal laminates can be manufactured without difficulty.
