摘要

In 1982, the U.S. Marine Corps requested the U.S. Geological Survey to determine the Twenty-nine Palms long term availability of ground water at the Marine Corps with special emphasis on the Surprise Spring ground-water basin as part of a two-phase study. The first phase, completed in 1985, involved completing a detailed gravity survey to estimate the thickness of the sedimentary deposits in the Surprise Spring, Deadman, and Mesquite basins (Moyle, 1984). The second phase of the study, described in the report, used the geohydrologic information collected during phase 1 of the study to develop and calibrate a digital ground-water-flow model of the Surprise Spring ground-water basin. The model will help refine the understanding of the geohydrology of the basin and can be used to help determine the long-term availability of ground water in the basins by evaluating the changing ground-water conditions resulting from historic and proposed pumping in the basin. During the initial development of the digital model, it became apparent that additional geohydrologic data were needed to describe the Surprise Spring ground-water basin. Additional geohydrologic information was collected during this phase of the study.
