The protection of human life, animals and plants, of waters, soil, and airagainst environmental pollution is one of the most important tasks of our society. On the one hand, the effectiveness of environmental protection depends on citizens and companies developing awareness of environmental needs and behaving in such a way that environmental pollution is minimized. On the other hand, public authorities must contribute to the prevention of future environmental risks and to the clean-up of existing environmental pollution. In more detail, the government of the Federal Republic of Germany is dealing with the following tasks: Protection of inland waters; Protection of seas and coastal waters; Air quality control; Noise abatement; Protection against hazardous substances including environmental chemicals; Waste management; Nature protection and landscape conservation; Protection of soil; Environmental impact assessment; Gene Technology; and Radiation protection.
