The data summary is based on the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey's Institutional Population Component. Estimates are provided of the number and distribution of residential facilities for the mentally retarded by facility type, bed size, geographic region, type of ownership, certification status, and type of services provided. The facility characteristics described in this report are derived from information provided by facility administrators and designated staff in sampled facilities for the mentally retarded.
