摘要

Aquaculture - the farming of aquatic animals and plants - is the fastest growing component of United States agriculture. Aquaculture has been practiced for over 2,000 years in Asia, and for more than a century in the United States; however, most of the growth of the U.S. aquaculture industry has occurred over the past decade. Aquaculture in America supplies healthful, high quality food and important industrial materials. It provides jobs for rural America, helps reduce the U.S. trade deficit, and contributes to alleviation of the world's hunger and natural resources problems. It is based on sustained production of renewable resources and promotes a healthy environment.
