The Pressure-Volume-Temperature (P-V-T) surfaces for pure components and binary mixtures have been examined experimentally using the Burnett-Isochoric P-V-T methods over a period of years. The data have been fitted along each isochore and over the entire surface. The equation of state for the surfaces were fitted by a modified version of the equation of state developed by Harr. Double differentiation along each isochore was performed to see if an inflection point along the isochore existed. The nature of the P-V-T surface could be succinctly gathered for both the pure components and the mixtures by examining whether the isochores were open or closed. Normal fluids and normal fluid mixtures gave closed isochores (with respect to the inflection locus and the vapor pressure curve). On the other hand, quantum fluids and their mixtures, and hydrogen bonding fluids and their mixtures showed open isochoric inflection loci owing to the effect of temperature on the effective molecular sizes of the quantum fluid and the hydrogen bonding fluids. The resulting observations dictate the form of the equation of state and/or the limitations of the existing corresponding states correlations and the equations of state presently being used to represent P-V-T surfaces.
