The test method described in this volume measures slow crack growth (SCG) inpolyethylene gas distribution pipe. Resistance to SCG can be characterized for purposes of performance prediction in terms of crack-tip stress intensity factor, defined by the theory of linear elastic fracture mechanics. Two test methods are presented, both of which require a numerical analysis of the crack length versus time data to determine the rate of crack growth. Apparatus, specimens, procedures, calculations, interpretations, precisions, bias, and the method for reporting results are discussed. This report is intended as a manual for conducting the Slow Crack Growth Test and analysis procedures. Its format is consistent with the practices of ASTM.
