Experience of Warren Consolidated Industries (WCI) in the operation of a blast furnace at high rates of natural gas injection is summarized and interpreted through an evaluation of operating data obtained during both normal and upset conditions, with emphasis on the use of natural gas as a tool to control furnace operations. Upset or abnormal conditions considered included shutdowns and restarts, loss of oxygen or natural gas, low hot-metal temperature, low stockline, and slipping or hanging. The accumulated experience is expected to provide insights on the effectiveness of the use of natural gas instead of coke. Natural gas, a promising substitute, can replace coke effectively and provide substantial improvements in furnace productivity.
