Three-Dimensional Modeling of Pollutant Transport in Surface Waters

The assessment of possible impacts of water-borne pollutants in surface water bodies and/or the development of remedial solutions to water quality degradation require the detailed simulation of the eventual fate of contaminants based on mathematical modeling techniques. The development of such a technique would provide a powerful tool to engineers and scientists concerned with the assessment of the long-term consequences of historical disposal patterns or the short-term consequences of a catastrophic event. Using the time dependent velocity fields furnished by a separate hydrodynamic model or a physical model, a transport model solves the advection diffusion equation to simulate the effects of differential advection and turbulent diffusion on a concentration field. An Eulerian-Lagrangian algorithm, based on operator-splitting techniques has been formulated for the three-dimensional advection-diffusion equation. This combines the advantage of a fixed Eulerian grid and computationally powerful Lagrangian technique.
