This North Carolina endemic is listed as endangered. Presently there are only three known remaining populations of the Tar spinymussel--two extremely small, apparently nonreproducing, populations in the main stem of the Tar River and a third, larger population, in Swift Creek, a tributary to the Tar River. The historic range of the species is unknown, but available information indicates it also once occurred in portions of the main stem of the Tar River from Franklin County to northern Pitt County, North Carolina.
