Ruths golden aster is currently listed as an endangered species by the State of Tennessee and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is known from two populations in Polk County, Tennessee. The Ocoee River population supports about 600 individuals, while the Hiwassee population supports 10,000 to 15,000 individuals.
