A radiochemical procedure for the determination of (99)Tc to overcome the problems of presentation of the sample for ICP-MS and the low specific radioactivity found in environmental samples is optimized. The % chemical yield for water and soil samples was found to be 65 + or - 15; and for biological samples 70 + or - 11. The limit of detection of (99)Tc by ICP-MS was 0.004 ppb.
