Evaluation of Sulfur Extended Asphalt in Connecticut

The Connecticut Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, placed 16,905.6 tons of sulfur extended asphalt (SEA) on a major rehabilitation project. The report covers a 5-year evaluation of the performance of both the SEA and adjoining conventional bituminous concrete overlays. Comparisons on the distress, stability and skid resistance of both types of pavement are presented. Problems encountered during construction of the SEA pavement are also summarized.
