Exurban Industrialization

摘要

Manufacturing has migrated from central cities and the suburbs to the exurbs thatare located roughly 15 to 120 miles from central cities, depending on central city population. Economic base analysis shows that exurbia is increasing its share of the jobs in all manufacturing industries except printing, transportation equipment, and instruments. Regression analysis indicates that manufacturing growth in exurbia is negatively associated with metropolitan manufacture value added, manufacturing employment as a percentage of total employment, union membership, property taxes, and distance to a small airport. Manufacturing growth is positively associated with the adult population percentage of high school graduates, expenditures in public education, and farm population.
