The report describes the results of a mini pilot plant demonstration of a newprocess for separating hydrogen sulfide from natural gas and producing liquid sulfur in one process step. The system is a regenerative liquid redox process, the liquid is water buffered with potassium citrate, the oxidizing agent is sulfur dioxide. Results show the reactor can be a simple tank filled with packing (no moving parts). High reaction rates prove an 18 gallon column can produce 1 T/day of sulfur. The liquid can carry up to 160 grams/liter of sulfur dioxide, at 120 grams/liter a circulating rate of 1 gallon/minute can produce 1 T/day of sulfur. Non-plugging regenerative operation was demonstrated. There are no solid or liquid wastes. The only byproduct, potassium sulfate, is a useful fertilizer and amounts to only .05% of the sulfur recovered. The sulfur always separated cleanly from the system (there are no metallic chemical additives to foul the sulfur during process upsets). The system tolerated a wide range of process upset conditions without plugging.
