Hydraulic Characteristics of Surficial Soils Around Domestic Waste Disposal Siteson Lehtrar Road-Islamabad

Steady state water flow rates in surficial soils are measured at 17 locationsaround two domestic waste deposits in the vicinity of village Jhang Sayedan on Lehtrar road, Islamabad. A computer code K-SOIL is developed and used to transform water flow rates into various soil hydraulic characteristics such as saturated hydraulic conductivity (K), matric flux potential phi, alpha parameter alpha, soil sorptivity (S) and soil heterogeneity. Possibilities of contaminant transport from waste dumps to shallow groundwater system are discussed in view of the low to medium hydraulic conductivities of surficial soils in the study area.
