Information necessary for examining the chemical removal of smoke from theatmosphere by ozone has been obtained. The kinetics, products and temperature dependence of the reaction were determined. Initially the rate of ozone loss on carbon was followed. Gaseous products were quantified. An oxygen molecule was detected for every ozone lost. Initial loss rate was greatest. Heating the surface following exposure liberated products and restored reactivity. The reaction of ozone with soot was examined following loss of soot at temperatures from 21 degrees to 175 degrees C. Treating four types of soot together the activation energy and the order with respect to ozone were 11 (+ or -) kcal mol-1 and 0.89 (+ or -0.05), respectively. The reaction of ozone with acetylene smoke was the final method of examining the reaction. The change of smoke size distribution and ozone concentration were monitored while controlling the temperature. Irreproducibly caused the study to be unsuccessful.
