Re-Analysis of Item Nonresponse Rates in the 1988 PPCIS: A Technical Memorandum

The technical memorandum presents a re-analysis of item non-response rates in the1988 Physicians' Practice Cost and Income Survey (PPCIS) and supplements the 1988 PPCIS Handbook which describes the data preparation steps for the 1988 PPCIS Public Use File (Dayhoff et al 92). Earlier calculations of non-response rates may overstate the number of usable numeric responses available for analysis because of exclusion of out-of-range and uncodeable items from the definition of item non-response by NORC (Thalji et al; 1991). Two types of non-response rates have been calculated: question-level item non-response and case-level item non-response. In general, the revised item non-response rates are slightly lower than the original rates when combined items are excluded and due to the extensive cleaning performed (notwithstanding the inclusion of out-of-range and uncodeable items as additional sources of non-response).
