Association of Hospital Structure and Outcomes of a Revascularization Procedure

The aim of the study was to identify characteristics of hospitals associated withhigher than predicted rates of complications following bypass surgery or angioplasty. Two data sets were used for the study: one collected detailed clinical information using MedisGroups; the other was a larger data set of all revascularization procedures based on 1988 Medicare billing data and mortality information. Information on hospital characteristics was obtained from the AHA 1988 Annual Survey of Hospitals. For patient level analyses using the detailed clinical information, all hospital characteristics evaluated were significantly associated with patient complications. For the Medicare billing data analyses, hospital characteristics associated with lower mortality were better financial status of the hospital, an increased percentage of registered nurses, and more procedures.
