The World Bank Group has developed universal standards for the legal treatment offoreign direct investment. The guidelines cover each of the four main areas usually dealt with in investment treaties, namely the admission, treatment, and expropriation of foreign investments and the settlement of disputes between governments and foreign investors. The publication includes the text of these guidelines and the detailed report which explains that text. It should be of great relevance to the continuous efforts in member countries to improve investment climates and facilitate greater investment flows. The guidelines may also assist in the progressive development of international law in this important area.
