SPR 0404: Industry Outlook Report, Fishing Industry of India (1991)

The American Consulate General in Madras, India has prepared a 22-page report onIndia's fishing industry in 1991. The report contains an industry overview and sections on fisheries catch, exports, fleet, international agreements and fisheries investment. The report describes the performance of the India fishing industry during 1990-1991 and its prospects for 1992. Catch held steady for the third consecutive year at 2.2 million tons. Exports increased a record 25.8 percent by quantity to 139,419 t and 41 percent in value to $314 million. Fishery exports are expected to rise further in value to $529 million in 1991-1992. The Government of India (GOI) is actively promoting aquaculture in light of declining catch and concern about marine shrimp resource overexploitation. The GOI has liberalized regulations to encourage joint ventures in the marine fisheries sector and tap the largely unexplored 4.5 million tons of potential marine fish resources.
