Policy Synthesis on Assisted Living for the Frail Elderly

The synthesis explains why assisted living has become important from a policyperspective; gives a broad overview of what is meant by assisted living; estimates the number of frail elderly; discusses the segment of the population for whom assisted living is an appropriate option; and assesses the efficacy and cost of this type of care. The paper also considers a number of issues faced in regulating assisted living; discusses the public resources available to finance these services; examines the major concerns encountered by states in developing assisted living programs; and describes a number of specific state programs.
