Predictive Equations for Bridge Scour Applicable to Streams in Pennsylvania. Field Manual

Local scour can be caused by local disturbances in the flow, such as vortices and eddies around obstructions. Many of the existing equations for the prediction of local scour depths were developed from laboratory flume data for sediments with a uniform size gradation, such as sand bed channels. These equations overpredict the depths of scour than what actually occurs on streams in Pennsylvania. A data set consisting of information from fifteen (15) bridges was collected and used for the development of predictive equations for both pier and abutment scour.
