Resource Management in Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks

The paper presents a general approach to the problem of bandwidth management inintegrated broadband digital networks. The new management space is identified as a basis for a multidimensional approach to network control. The role of time scales in structuring events and management actions is discussed along with a network layering which supports resource abstraction. A direct mapping of the abstraction is the concept of equivalent bandwidth and its application to call level control. The parameters needed for the characterization of the call, the traffic models used to estimate the equivalent bandwidth and the approximations needed to obtain a tractable computational model are reviewed. The notions of generalized equivalent bandwidth and admission policies are analyzed with respect to the required flexibility and the inherent complexity of the broadband networking environment.
