Editing Images of Text

摘要

The paper describes Image EMACS, a text editor for binary document images whichillustrates an alternative to the format conversion paradigm. The goal of Image EMACS is to allow images to text to be created and manipulated as if they were conventional text files. The inputs and outputs of Image EMACS are simple interpretations of image elements, rather than a complete symbolic description of the image. Several applications of Image EMACS are presented including editing multilingual documents, reformatting text to a new column width, differential comparison of two versions of a document, and preprocessing an image prior to character recognition.
