Coal seams contain some of the richest known reserves of potentially recoverablenatural gas in the United States (estimated at 145 Tcf). Critical data requirements for reliable forecasts of gas production and eventual recovery from coal seam gas reservoirs include gas content and composition, sorption isotherm, diffusion coefficient, cleat porosity, in situ coal moisture content, reservoir permeability, temperature and pressure. Significant effort in terms of laboratory testing, well testing and data analysis is required to assemble this information. The objective of the project is to determine how changes in micropore structure and test variables influence laboratory measurements of gas sorption and diffusion phenomena in coal.
