The 21st Manor Dump site is adjacent to Meadowbrook Elementary School in Ft.Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. It was originally a borrow pit or natural depression where uncontrolled dumping occurred. Children or other individuals may also have come in contact with contaminated soil and water when the dump was open. On-site shallow groundwater contains arsenic, chromium, lead and vanadium. Off-site groundwater is contaminated with vinyl chloride, trichloroethene, 1,1-dichloroethene, 1,2-dichloroethene, and chloroform, but the contamination does not appear to be site-related. However, the off-site contamination is a public health concern and has resulted in the closure of eight municipal supply wells and seven private wells within a one mile radius of the site.
