Groundwater and surface-water contamination have occurred near Gratuity Road inthe Town of Groton, Massachusetts. The primary contaminants are trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA). These contaminants have migrated into residential wells on and near Gratuity Road. It is likely that the TCE and TCA found in all but one of the Gratuity Road area residential wells in 1986 and 1987 came from an unknown source. Until this source is identified, it is not possible to estimate the length and level of exposure. Most of the residences were connected to the Groton municipal water supply system in the Summer of 1987. However, some residences still rely upon individual wells for drinking water and other domestic purposes (e.g., bathing and cleaning). The ATSDR considers the Groton/Gratuity Road contamination a public health hazard to those few individuals who are still using or who will use private wells contaminated with TCE and/or TCA.
