Impact of Non-Uniform Traffic in a Two-Stage ATM Switch

Recently, a two-stage self-routing switch fabric with output queue has beenproposed. It focuses on constructing very large switch sizes by using small packet switch modules. Each switch is designed by using Knockout principle. The switch has been shown to have very close performance to original Knockout switch with a much reduced hardware cost under uniform traffic model. However, an ATM switch should be able to handle non-uniform traffic. In this paper, we give an analysis model and equations for the two-stage switch under some non-uniform traffic patterns which are used to derive the packet low probability in concentrator. In this study, traffic intensity at each input port is allowed to vary and the output destination distribution is non-uniform. We investigate the impact of the non-uniform traffic versus input imbalance, output imbalance, and input and output imbalance. The results show that packet low probability under the output imbalance traffic is more than the input imbalance traffic, and the input and output imbalance traffic.
