There has been concern with regard to the presence of weld-induced fabricationflaws in 9 percent nickel steel LNG storage tanks. Previous studies have shown that structural integrity can be assured if the material has the ability to arrest a running crack with an adequate margin of safety. Current experiment used to demonstrate crack arrest capability requires large specimens and thus is not acceptable for routine industry applications. A simplified test and analysis method to determine crack arrest toughness is of great value to the gas industry.
