The report deals with research related to the use of a Controlled Low StrengthMaterial (CLSM) as a backfill (Controlled Density Fill, CDF) around two flexible culverts as demonstration projects. The projects consisted of a pipe arch and a long span arch. The research objectives were to study: (1) Reduction of minimum cover required on metal pipe; (2) Reduction of foundation requirements on metal pipe arches; (3) Development of design information for the use of Controlled Low Strength Materials (CLSM); (4) Economics of CLSM materials for backfilling culverts; and (5) Development of design procedures for flexible pipes using CLSM-CDF. General research activities are described in four separate parts.
