摘要

Costa Rica has a very small fishing industry. Fisherman catch only about 22,000 metric tons annually. The countries most important fisheries are for shrimp, dorado (mahi-mahi), thread herring, and tuna. Precise statistics on the 1990 catch are not available, but unconfirmed reports suggest that the marine catch declined by 10%, primarily as a result of declining thread herring, shrimp, and dorado catches. The Government is instituting tough new management programs to protect depleted stocks. Processing companies, especially the canneries, reported a shortage of raw material. Costa Rican fishery exports totaled over $50 million in 1990, declining somewhat after several years of expansion. The decline was due primarily to lower catches, but price declines and devaluation of the colon were also factors.
