摘要

This report profiles the family characteristics and the level of parentalinvolvement reported by the parents of 1988 eighth graders. About 93 percent of the parents of the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88) eighth grade participants were surveyed providing extensive information about the home life and family experiences of the students. This study examines two different types of parental involvement--child directed involvement, which includes activities such as parent-child discussions about school experiences and rules applied in the home regarding television viewing; and school-directed involvement, such as PTA membership and volunteering in the school. The NELS:88 survey provides extensive information about these aspects of parental involvement. This study uses this information to develop a profile of parental involvement as well as linking specific types of involvement to student performance in school and to whether or not students drop out of school between the 8th and 10th grades.
