Inventory and Evaluation of Historic Buildings and Structures on Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

Scott Air Force Base was created in 1917 and has served as a training center for pilots and crews of airplanes and airships. It has been utilized by various branches of the Army and Air Force and is now the home of the 375th Military Air Wing. The built environment of the original base area reflects construction from 1923 to the present with the majority of buildings constructed between 1937 and 1946. The study documents 119 buildings which were constructed prior to 1946. The buildings include multi-family dwellings, administration buildings, recreational facilities, automobile garages, warehouses, and industrial and support buildings for aircraft operation and maintenance. The majority of these buildings are of brick construction, were designed with Colonial Revival detailing, and were built from standardized designs. Management recommendations include the preparation of an historic district nomination to the National Register of Historic Places for the Scott Field Historic District (105 contributing properties). The report should also be coordinated with other studies of World War II era installations to discern similar and dissimilar patterns of construction, materials, style, and standardization.
