Pension coverage among private-sector full-time women workers increased from 38 percent in 1972 to 40 percent in 1979 and 43 percent in 1988. Coverage among men declined from 54 percent in 1972 and 55 percent in 1979 to 49 percent in 1988. The growth of women's pension coverage is important for what it may say about the working of the labor market and for what it may portend about the incomes of future retirees. The research examines the changing characteristics and pension coverage rates of men and women workers and their jobs, and examines the implications of the analysis for pension policy and research.
