Nondestructive Testing of Load-Transfer Devices

The report presents field performance observations and laboratory test results for load-transfer devices (LTDs) used in transverse joints in New York: I-beams and round dowels. The recorded field measurements resulted from three types of nondestructive tests: pinning (horizontal movement), DVJM (differential vertical joint movement under load), and faulting (NYSDOT and Georgia faultmeters). Lab pull-out tests were also performed on the two LTD types. Field observations and lab test results were generally favorable. None of the test pavements had developed significant faulting. Horizontal and vertical measurements were comparable to values previously reported on pavements of similar age. A literature search investigating possible use of another nondestructive testing device, the falling weight deflectometer (FWD), for joint investigations is summarized.
