The report presents an analysis of the heat required to maintain the temperature of third rail above freezing during weather conditions which could result in icing. The purpose is to compare heated rail to RF Deicing. A cost analysis is presented to compare costs for a single event, annual expected costs based on weather history, maintenance costs and initial installation costs. The cost is based on a 10 mile transit line using current practices for rail heater installation and energy costs determined from a survey of the transit authorities. The results show the RF Third Rail Deicer System to be the cost effective application for a projected design marketable model.
