The work addressed two main tasks: identifying a catalyst which would inducebranched filament growth from natural gas, and locating the catalyst on the interior surface of the graphite tube so that the filaments would grow into its core; and wetting a carbon filament uniformly with the aluminum matrix while avoiding decomposition of the filament. A review of the literature on the vapor growth of carbon filaments is included in the appendix.
