HAPEX-Sahel: Basic Description of Methods and Data Sets

The Hydrological Atmospheric Pilot EXperiment in the Sahel (HAPEX-Sahel) isdeveloped to improve the understanding of interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere in semi-arid areas. HAPEX-Sahel includes an intensive field experiment from August 15 to October 9, 1992 (Special Observation Period, SOP) and longterm extensive monitoring of soil and weather characteristics as rainfall and soil moisture. This report documents the field-activities and the resulting datasets. For that reason, the depicted results are hardly analyses. The first part of this report describes the set-up and methods used to determine the different characteristics. In the second part the data are described and some preliminary results are given. All data-sets, described in appendix II, are also available on diskette. In addition to this report, slides and photographs from the SOP are available.
