摘要

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 was designed to establish rights for persons of all ages with disabilities; however, it was conceived as civil rights legislation by younger persons in the disability rights movement. For that reason--and others--older people with disabilities and some aging professionals may not be aware of the rights offered by this new legislation. The ADA can open new doors by protecting the rights of those older persons with disabilities who cannot afford to retire or want to stay in the labor force. In addition to discussing ADA protections and early implementation efforts, this resource brief suggests educational efforts for the Aging Network and lists resources available to assist the Network in meeting its opportunities and responsibilities under the Act.
